Artur Chmielewski is an engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 2004 he was in charge of Rosetta mission which primary goal was to catch comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, make first controlled landing on a comet, measure and observe it, as well as two other asteroids en route. Prior to Rosetta, Artur was a Project Element Manager on Deep Space 1 mission and a power system engineer for Galileo spacecraft, which studied Jupiter and its moons, as well as Ulysses, which studied never-before-examined north and south poles of the Sun.
“The excitement, inventions and creativity that followed in the next five years were unprecedented. We were creating a new discipline of engineering; everything was surprising and frequently non intuitive."
Artur wanted to work for space agency and explore space ever since he found out about NASA. At the age of 18 he constructed a laser, which turned out to be a first giant leap towards his dream job as the project attracted the attention of University of Michigan. Artur was granted visa and left to study in the USA. He signed up for several job fairs held on campus for various companies, including Ford Motor Company, and at the same time he tried to get attention of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He succeeded on his third attempt. Although JPL could not hire him for a space job, his experience at Ford qualified him for the JPL electric car program. Artur took the job and, after the project was cancelled, he quickly moved to work on space missions. He has managed several flight projects and was an engineer for Galileo, Ulysses and Cassini spacecraft. He also managed a flagship pre-project - space radio astronomy mission ARISE and was responsible for development of 9 space instruments and several new technology devices. Apart from his scientific work, Artur was a consultant for several Hollywood SCi-Fi movies, including Armageddon.
